How to Discover the Career of Your Dreams

Do you work in a career that doesn’t satisfy you? It’s easy to feel stuck because your job is providing you with security. It can be daunting to leave that security for the pursuit of your passion.

Good news!  There are steps you can take today to build the career you truly desire.

Confucius said, “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Heed his advice and you’ll be glad you left your old job behind!

Here are some strategies that can help you transition to your dream career or business:

Get focused. It’s important to have a plan in place. Write down the specific job you’d like to have and the steps you need to take in order to get there.

Assign a timeline. Be sure to give yourself a realistic timeline. As much as you’d like to start your dream job right away, allocate time to do the research and what you need to put in place to start it.

Consider the financial cost. If your dream career involves owning your own business, it’s important to figure out how much this is going to cost you. Research your options, such as how you can save up the money or obtain a small business loan. If your dream job involves relocation, make sure you understand the costs of moving.

Seek advice. Look to people who already have your dream career and discuss your options with them. Network. Go to a conference, or join a networking group in your area.   If this isn’t feasible, find websites or message boards online that pertain to the field. Consider hiring a career coach to work with you to help develop clear goals, strategies, and resources to help you with a clear transition.

Time Management. Your current job probably takes up a great deal of your time Budget time into your week to specifically focus on working on your goals to obtain that dream job. Be realistic and set accountable due dates for each step in the process.

During this process, recognize that transition takes planning, leaving comfort zones and willing to take some risk without fear. Focus on your end result, leading a career that you are passionate about.
